I know it sounds weird, but there is such a thing as "Booming Sand."

Imagine you are walking across some far away desert and suddenly, without warning, a strange rumbling sound starts. It gets louder and softer, louder and softer.

You would be scared! Not me though, because I know about booming sand.

"How can sand make a booming noise?"

The noise is made by sand falling over sand. This usually happens when the wind has blown sand into a dune and the top of the dune falls over and slides down the rest of the dune.

Click on the speaker and you can hear what kind of noise this famous boomer makes. Remember, next time you are walking across a desert, you could hear this.
