The arctic wolves have revealed an abundance of
information about family life. This is because the arctic wolves do not
fear humans as other wolves do.
- Like other wolves, arctic wolves
have and average litter size of 6
- In the arctic, it is impossible
to dig a den like other wolves do. So, arctic wolves use caves and
crevices in rocks. Sometimes they have to have the pups out in the open,
because no den can be found.
- All members of the wolf pack help
keep the pups feed.
- The Mother wolf stays in the den
for the first three weeks of the pups life. The alpha wolf will provided
food for the mother during this time.
- The adults carry food for the
pups in their stomachs. When the adults get to the pups, they throw up.
This is how the pups get food.
- If a pup strays to far from the
den, the mother wolf will go over and pick the pup with her mouth. Even
with the powerful jaws the mother has, she is very gentle and never
hurts the pup.
- All arctic wolf pups are born a
yellowish brown color. The fur turns white as they grow
older.
